According to a report released by the World Intellectual Property Organization of the People's Republic of China in Geneva on the 11th, despite the poor performance of the global economy, global patent applications continued to maintain a strong growth momentum in 2011. Regarding the number of patent applications accepted by the domestic patent office, China has become the world’s largest patent applicant.

The report pointed out that last year, China accepted more than 520,000 patent applications, 500,000 in the United States and 340,000 in Japan. After China surpassed Japan in 2010, it surpassed the United States in 2011 and became the world’s largest patent applicant.

At the press conference held at the Palais des Nations in Geneva on the same day, Francis Gurry, Director-General of the World Intellectual Property Office, stated that although it is not possible to simply compare the number of IP applications in various countries, the data shows that in the past, Western countries had taken the lead in innovation. The pattern has changed.

The report shows that in 2011, the total number of patent applications worldwide was 2.14 million, which exceeded the 2 million mark for the first time, an increase of 7.8% from 2010. Gao Rui said that the continuous increase in the number of intellectual property applications indicates that although the global economic situation is not optimistic, companies are still innovating. This is good news for the global economy and lays a foundation for the global economy to achieve growth and prosperity in the next few years.

According to the report, in 2011, the number of utility model patent applications worldwide exceeded 670,000, an increase of 35% from 2010, and most of the increase was due to applications accepted by the State Intellectual Property Office of China. Japanese and American residents have filed the most utility model patent applications overseas, but most of them are accepted by the State Intellectual Property Office of China.

In 2011, the number of global trademark applications reached a record 4.2 million, an increase of 13.3% over 2010. The rapid increase in the number of trademark applications in China is the main factor in the increase in the total number of global trademark applications in recent years. Last year, the number of global industrial design patent applications exceeded 770,000, an increase of 16% over 2010, and this major driving force for significant growth is also China.

In 2011, the performance of Chinese companies submitted to the World Intellectual Property Organization in accordance with the Patent Cooperation Treaty was outstanding. ZTE submitted 2,826 patent applications last year, which surpassed Japan’s Panasonic Corporation and ranked the world’s top patent applications. Huawei ranked third with 1,831 patent applications.
