At the press conference held at the Palais des Nations in Geneva on the same day, Francis Gurry, Director-General of the World Intellectual Property Office, stated that although it is not possible to simply compare the number of IP applications in various countries, the data shows that in the past, Western countries had taken the lead in innovation. The report shows that in 2011, the total number of patent applications worldwide was 2.14 million, which exceeded the 2 million mark for the first time, an increase of 7.8% from 2010. According to the report, in 2011, the number of utility model patent applications worldwide exceeded 670,000, an increase of 35% from 2010, and most of the increase was due to applications accepted by the State Intellectual Property Office of China. Japanese and American residents have filed the most utility model patent applications overseas, but most of them are accepted by the State Intellectual Property Office of China.
In 2011, the number of global trademark applications reached a record 4.2 million, an increase of 13.3% over 2010.
