It has high solubility in water, but the dissolution rate is slow, and the aqueous solution is acidic. The complexes of divalent metal ions are more stable than those of monovalent metal ions, and are easy to hydrolyze to orthophosphate in warm water, acid or alkali solution. Sodium hexametaphosphate has strong hygroscopicity and begins to become sticky after hygroscopicity. For some metal ions (such as calcium, magnesium, etc.), it has the ability to form soluble complexes, so it can be used to soften water.
