The American Chemistry Council has issued an environmental profile report on the production of nine commonly used plastic resins and four polyurethane precursors. The reports involved resins including high density, low density, and linear low density polyethylene; polypropylene; PET; general purpose and high impact polystyrene; The four PU precursors are flexible foam PU, polyether polyol, rigid foam PU polyether polyol, methylene diphenyl diisocyanate and toluene diisocyanate, respectively.
The report included data on current North American countries in quantifying the total energy demand, sources of energy, air pollutants, and solid waste generated from the production of plastic materials.
The report entitled "Summary Report: List of the Life Cycles of 9 Plastic Resins and 4 Polyurethane Precursors" was prepared by Franklin Associates, a subsidiary of Eastern Research Group Inc. The report is available for free viewing on the ACC website.
Keith Christman, ACC's general manager of the plastics market, said in a press release: “As more and more companies seek to improve the efficiency and sustainability of their products and operations, they are increasingly looking at life cycle inventory research in the decision-making process. Whether it is a resin supplier, a product manufacturer, or a retail giant like Wal-Mart, all rely on life-cycle data to help reduce its environmental footprint and improve performance.â€
