According to Kokomo Tribune, a local newspaper, Chrysler asked the government to provide financial incentives for its idle factories. A Chrysler spokesman confirmed the news but did not disclose the details.
A company statement stated: "We had planned to invest $1.3 billion in the production of the next generation of automotive transmission components. Now, Kokomo will remain our first choice for producing transmission components."
The plant covers an area of ​​781,500 square feet. The site was originally a joint venture between Chrysler's predecessor (before the bankruptcy reorganization) and German component maker Getrag. At that time, the joint venture originally planned to employ 1,200 employees to produce dual clutch transmissions, but in 2008 the joint venture filed for bankruptcy protection and eventually closed down.
Analysts said that Chrysler’s automotive transmission technology has been the key to its recent sales success. Chrysler introduced an 8-speed automatic transmission on its large sedan and introduced a 9-speed automatic transmission in small cars. The two gearboxes are also currently being produced at the Kokomo plant.
